Dr J M Mason …
… came from Scotland in 1895 and set up in general practice in Ōtaki. He helped set up the Ōtaki Cottage Hospital and was its first superintendent. Left Ōtaki on appointment as Chief Health Officer in the Department of Health from 1 December 1900.
He was particularly interested in Maori health and in the treatment of tuberculosis. His first TB sanatorium, Te Waikato, opened near Cambridge in 1902, and the second at Ōtaki, 1907.
